Mercedes SL 65s

Summary

SL originally stood for Sports Light, but it certainly isn't light these days. No matter, with a choice of engines you can chose just how quickly you reach terminal velocity, and which ever you choose they're all electronically governed to 155mph. That is plenty with the roof down. And what a roof. The finest folding hard top available compliments a beautifully elegant body that draws looks with the roof up or down. As long as you only need to carry one other person then SL makes a strong claim to being the best car in the world.

Behind The Wheel

A great place to be. Rain or shine the SL offers the perfect cabin environment. It seems to do everything well, whether you're cruising or going for a Sunday morning blast it feels good. The cabin is opulent but the weight of big leather chairs, lashings of sound deadening and other luxuries do little to blunt performance because there is so much power and the chassis technology find handling response that heavy cars just shouldn't have. Offers a big feel-good factor.

Comfort

Excellent seats are multi-adjustable and can even offer a massage if you've ticked the right options box. With the roof down the SL is pleasingly buffet-free, whilst with the ingenious folding hard-top up, the cabin is silent. This is an environment you could happily spend all day in and still be comfortable.

Equipment

Standards of trim are fairly comprehensive - even the SL350 gets the essential luxuries, comprehensive safety equipment and of course that trick electric folding hard-top. SL500 has automatic climate control, bi-xenon headlights, a CD autochanger, Mercedes’ COMAND navigation and audio system, heated leather seats and metallic paint. SL 55 AMG adds a full AMG body kit, aluminium cabin trim in place of wood, sports seats, an AMG steering wheel, two twin-exhaust pipes, steering wheel paddle shift control for automatic transmission, and a Bose audio system.

Performance

SL350 is smooth and sweet but lacks real power. SL500 is quick enough to do justice to the looks. SL55 AMG has nearly 480bhp on tap thanks to supercharged V8 - it has supercar performance and a muscle car soundtrack. Oddly, the SL600 costs about the same, offers similar performance but with a more refined delivery from its twin-turbo V12, whilst for the time the SL65 is the ultimate with 612bhp - all top out at 155mph thanks to the engine limiter.

Handling

Thanks to hydraulically-controlled adaptive suspension (optional on the SL350) the big Merc handles in a surprisingly agile fashion, as technology reigns in much of the pitching and rolling that would other wise occur. Yet when you only want to cruise, it offers a ride that is relaxing and compliant. Traction and stability control systems prevent exuberant drivers from the embarrassment for being towed out of a field - purists might complain that the system can never be fully disengaged but we can't see many owners ever wanting to.

Practicality

The hard roof means no sacrifice is made for having a convertible and clever packaging has freed up more boot space when the roof is down. There is only two seats and you'll never get a chest fridge home in one but as far as two seat convertibles go its as good as it gets.

Reliability

Some recent Mercedes-Benz models have drifted a bit in the quality stakes, but this SL meets expectations of peerless build quality and engineering.

Safety

Although it hasn't been crash tested as yet, the SL protects occupants well. There are head/thorax and driver and passenger airbags plus a pop-up roll-over protection should the worst happen. Just about every known electronic driver aid is fitted to ensure that the driver doesn't lose control. There's even an optional system to alert police and ambulance services in the event of an accident and guide them to the car with satellite navigation.

Cost

If you have the sort of money to indulge in an SL then you won't be bothered about the running costs, but they're thirsty, expensive to insure and parts and servicing costs are high. However in the market for flash metal there are plenty that are even more expensive to run and it's such a desirable machine that residual values are very strong too.

Buying New

If you can only just stretch to the SL350, then we'd suggest you spend it on the SLK instead. The pricier models are good enough all-rounders to replace several cars in your collection. Be aware that there is a waiting list for most models and the options list can add to the cost considerably.

Buying Used

Due to demand, the right model could actually cost you more secondhand than when new although it has been on sale since 2002 so there's no shortage of supply. Obviously with a car like this reject anything that isn't perfect with a full service history.

Selling

You shouldn't have any problem at all selling an SL although trading it in at a dealer probably won't net you the biggest return but it will be the easiest sale.

Mercedes SL

Mercedes SL has done it again with the arrival of the new Mercedes Benz SL line. Not since the 190SL 1962 Mercedes Roadster and the 190SL 1959 Mercedes Roadster has a car generated the amount of enthusiasm that this particular Mercedes SL 500 did. Many favorable comparisons have been made between the 1954 300s Mercedes Roadster and the newer Mercedes CLS 500 series, but many still cling to the classic styling of the Mercedes Convertible of old, including the 1959 300d convertible Mercedes, 1965 300se convertible Mercedes, 1970 280se convertible Mercedes, 300SL Mercedes Roadster, and the 1956 300sc Mercedes Roadster. While the Mercedes CLK 500 represents a more affordable option than the "S" class, it lacks many of the amenities and upgrades. Many years ago when the Mercedes 220se convertible of 1960 rolled onto the scene, the Mercedes 500 series would have seemed like a quantum leap into the future. Some of the more popular searches for the "C" series MB included "Mercedes Benz CLS 500" and "500 Benz CLS Mercedes". Similarly popular searches for the "S" series MB included "Mercedes Benz SL 500" and "500 Benz Mercedes SL".
